六日講中へ(p.382)

This is primarily a missive to the Kō of Enuma gun, written in 1497(Meiō 6). It starts, as is usual for Rennyo, with thanks for the reception of 5,000 `hiki` of tribute, which was a substantial sum for this particular time. It follows with an observation that such a contribution comes from the essence of Buppō, and that many people, having made the decision to believe in Shinshū, will be granted a place in the afterlife. It is this belief that has granted Rennyo such a long life, and thus he asks that his message be relayed to all, not merely those who happen to read the letter. What this particular letter, in addition to those that follow, show is that Honganji was undergoing the process of institutionalization at this point. Tribute, which had previously been given as a donation, now appears on a regular basis.

      三坊主中へ御返事 (p.382)

Another short letter from Rennyo, written again in 1497. This concerns a reply from the `San Bōzu`, or the three Ikke shū temples of Kaga. Rennyo is always pleased to receive such responses, and he states that their details should be made known to all.
